HIGH GEAR

outfitted in Western-influenced Russian national costumes.

The painting, "Bathing the Red Horse" by Petrov-Vodkin stirred controversy in recent years when it was again exhibited to the masses attendant to the post-Stalinist "thaw." In spite of the fact that the painting was pre-Soviet and possessed no political implications (Petrov-Vodkin supported the Revolution) it was banned by Stalin. It may well have been its male nudity which really embarrassed homophobic Party "aparatchiks."

Lest I be accused of omitting numerous milestones of Russian homoerotica, as for instance,: Baron von Klodt's incredible equestrian nudes, let me say that this has been a swift crosssection of same-sex themes in Russia. All representative works would fill a hefty catalog.

To be sure, artistic accomplishments east of the Urals are. marred by blatant sexism, but they nevertheless afford us valuable historical insights, as well as clues as to what helped one in ten or so Russians stay warm through their long winter.

MUNITY VOICE

Dear High Gear Staff:

In an age where we as a people are more prone to criticize than compliment, I for one would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for taking the time to care, caring enough to write such a beautiful and sensitive paper. You have made me more aware, more proud of what I am, and I want to thank you for it.

Just a note to say the November issue was the best I've ever seen. I would hope that as you expand, you will be able to enclose more news of interest to us in the Columbus area. Sincerely, Dick Schaible Dignity/Columbus Columbus, Ohio.

Dear Dick:

High Gear would be happy to print any and all news, events, profiles, or feature articles from any part of the state of Ohio; but frankly, as an all volunteer effort with only two people handling news items, we are dependent on local gay organizations in other parts of the state to inform us of happenings and provide us with any material relevant to areas outside of Northeastern Ohio. Any readers who would like to submit articles may send them to High Gear, P.O. Box 6177, Cleveland, Ohio 44101. The Staff
